Green tea is renowned for its numerous health benefits and can be enjoyed both hot and cold. However, to maximize its positive effects on the body, it is important to drink it properly. It is widely known that adding sugar or milk—whether fresh, condensed, or powdered—should be avoided, as the proteins in milk can bind to the beneficial compounds in the tea, reducing their effectiveness. To fully reap the health benefits, it is best to drink pure, unflavored tea.

Cold Matcha

While drinking cold green tea is common, there are concerns among some people about its potential negative effects. Some believe that cold green tea may contribute to toxin buildup, which could lead to cancer or other serious health issues such as clogged arteries or colon problems. However, there is no conclusive research to support these claims.

Another argument suggests that adding ice to green tea dilutes its health benefits, as the coldness from the ice could lessen the effectiveness of the tea. If you prefer cold green tea, it is recommended to brew the tea yourself, refrigerate it, and avoid adding ice to preserve its antioxidants.

Conversely, there is a belief that drinking hot green tea may help prevent cancer due to the antioxidants found in the tea leaves. However, there is still no definitive research to confirm this claim. Some even argue that drinking hot green tea could increase the risk of esophageal cancer, although these claims remain unproven.

When it comes to drinking hot green tea, it is important to note that high temperatures can degrade catechins—key antioxidants—leaving only the aroma and taste. For those who prefer hot tea but still want to benefit from the full health potential, it is advisable to drink stronger tea. For instance, traditional Teochew Chinese tea is brewed with a higher concentration of tea leaves in smaller cups, similar to espresso. While some catechins will break down with heat, a higher concentration of tea leaves can ensure that some beneficial compounds remain.

There is also some research indicating that drinking hot tea on a warm day can actually help cool you down more effectively than iced tea. The sweating induced by hot tea can help regulate body temperature. However, drinking excessive cold tea may cause it to lose its cooling effect once it passes through the body.

Hot Matcha

While research is still inconclusive regarding whether hot or cold green tea is more beneficial, it is generally believed that drinking hot tea, especially at temperatures between 70-78°C for 2-4 minutes, preserves more antioxidants. Prolonged exposure to heat can cause a 20% loss of antioxidants, so it is important to avoid over-brewing. Additionally, green tea should ideally be consumed after meals to prevent the caffeine from affecting stomach acid levels and to avoid potential digestive discomfort, such as constipation.

Ultimately, whether you prefer hot or cold green tea, drinking it in moderation and at the right time can help you achieve the greatest health benefits.
